House of Representatives President Annita Demetriou expressed disappointment on Monday over the lack of progress on the Cyprus issue during a meeting with a group of foreign officials visiting Cyprus for the “Morphou Days of Remembrance” events. She also stressed the need to build on the convergences reached in negotiations up to and including Crans-Montana in 2017.
According to a House of Representatives announcement, the delegation included Athanasios Bouras, Third Vice-President of the Hellenic Parliament, and members of parliament Georgios Karasmanis, Michalis Katrinis and Rena Dourou, as well as Pambos Charalambous, a member of the UK House of Commons, and Slovenian MP Dusan Stojanovic.
The delegation also included mayors, deputy mayors and other local government representatives from Greece, France and the United Kingdom. The group was accompanied by Morphou Mayor Viktoras Hadjiavraam and members of the municipal council of the occupied town.
During the meeting, according to the announcement, the House of Representatives president stressed the importance of the foreign officials’ presence at the events organised by the occupied municipality and their contribution to efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue. She expressed her deep gratitude for their continued support for the Morphou community’s struggle for justice and return.
Addressing the Greek officials, Demetriou stressed that Greece had been and remains Cyprus’ staunchest supporter in efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue.
The foreign officials, in turn, expressed their support for the Cypriot people and hope that the Cyprus issue would be resolved, stressing that it remains a vital issue within the European Union.
