She would be the first The Left party candidate to lead Berlin since German reunification in 1990, the city\u2019s first mayor of Turkish descent \u2013 and its first woman of colour to hold the office.<\/p>\n<p>Eralp\u2019s campaign promises of affordable housing, rent controls and more political inclusion for immigrants and refugees contrasted with her rivals, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks ago, the AfD triumphed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/9\/6\/far-right-afd-wins-vote-in-germanys-saxony-anhalt-state-exit-polls\">Saxony-Anhalt<\/a>. But on Sunday, they came third in Berlin.<\/p>\n<p>Eralp\u2019s party nabbed the most votes, but it now needs allies to take control of the mayor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>As Germans look beyond traditional political candidates, her appeal may have grown, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a strong desire for disruption and radical political change,\u201d Martin Fuchs, a German political and digital consultant, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container--ads in-article-ads\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Additionally, Eralp\u2019s win after the AfD\u2019s \u201cshows that, in 2026, Germany is not only witnessing a rise in far-right parties, but [that] there continues to be a colourful, diverse, open and liberal Germany,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-promise-of-a-solidarity-city\">The promise of a \u2018solidarity city\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Eralp is no stranger to politics.<\/p>\n<p>A member of The Left party since 2017, she wants to see \u201calternatives to neoliberal policies\u201d and seeks to confront the \u201cracist AfD\u201d, according to her website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout an active civil society, progress to the left cannot be achieved,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She has served in the Berlin House of Representatives since 2021 and became deputy chair of The Left party\u2019s parliamentary group in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>She had a lengthy legal career, having studied law in Hamburg and worked for more than a decade as a legal adviser for The Left.<\/p>\n<p>The daughter of refugees has long advocated for migrant rights.<\/p>\n<p>Eralp interned with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, cofounded a migrant rights network within The Left party and is pushing for Berlin to become a \u201csolidarity city\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>That designation would see the German capital become more welcoming to refugees, end \u201cstigmatising police checks\u201d, she said, and improve immigrants\u2019 participation in civil society.<\/p>\n<p>She campaigned on a nationwide rent cap and wants more housing placed under municipal ownership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stand for a social policy \u2013 a policy that brings everyone along. EPA\/CHRISTOPH RUTENKOLK\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4970828\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elif Eralp (C) at a victory party [File: Christoph Rutenkolk\/EPA]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"germany-s-mamdani\">\u2018Germany\u2019s Mamdani\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Beyond rent freezes, Eralp has loftier goals as mayor, such as hosting a New Year reception for the homeless at city hall.<\/p>\n<p>She embraced the New York mayor\u2019s democratic socialist message as a campaign blueprint, with some calling her \u201cGermany\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/video\/talk-to-al-jazeera\/2026\/4\/9\/zohran-mamdani-on-100-days-as-new-york-mayor\">Mamdani<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Some of her party members travelled to New York to learn more about Zohran Mamdani\u2019s campaign and meet with his advisers.<\/p>\n<p>Eralp said his victory last year offered a model for left-wing parties worldwide, including in Germany. Both focused on fighting social injustice and making major cities more affordable.<\/p>\n<p>Her online presence was also crucial to her success, said Fuchs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container--ads in-article-ads\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWith the help of highly professional \u2018vibe\u2019 content \u2013 modelled on Zohran Mamdani\u2019s campaign in New York \u2026 [she] managed to connect with the everyday realities of many Berliners,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><em>Translation: Zohran Mamdani shows that a different kind of politics is possible. Join us as we discuss strategies, successes, and next steps with Elif Eralp, Maximilian Schirmer, Franziska Heinisch and Liza Pflaum. <\/em><em>Come along and join the conversation!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Eralp was by far the most visible candidate on social media, amassing the highest number of views across platforms at 6.3 million, according to an analytics platform, viral.app.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEralp\u2019s election could serve as a significant symbol, encouraging even more people from migrant communities to get involved in politics and to feel seen and heard in this society,\u201d Fuchs said. \u201c[It] could strengthen cohesion between citizens with and without a migrant background and thus help to counter division.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gero Neugebauer, a professor of political science at The Free University of Berlin, said Eralp is well suited to lead a German city, home to many immigrant communities since the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEralp has Turkish parents, was born in Munich and holds both German and Turkish citizenship. In this respect, [her taking] office would confirm the slogan: \u2018Look, this is Berlin\u2019,\u201d Neugebauer told Al Jazeera, referring to the local cultural catchphrase.<\/p>\n<p>But The Left party must still secure coalition partners and a majority in Berlin\u2019s House of Representatives, which elects the governing mayor.<\/p>\n<p>While in office, Eralp could struggle to fulfil some of her election promises, said Fuchs.<\/p>\n<p>She will have to convince about half of Berliners \u2013 which includes the business community \u2013 about her housing reforms, which could also involve lengthy legal hurdles, he said.<\/p>\n<p>That legal battle could play out as a potential conflict between the federal government and the state government, said Neugebauer.<\/p>\n<p>The Left party has also faced accusations of anti-Semitism \u2013 and would need to distance itself from them, Fuchs explained.<\/p>\n<p>But Eralp\u2019s win has made one thing imminently clear: Germans are looking for alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe result from Berlin seems to be following a much wider trend currently being seen in German politics: Voters looking beyond the established mainstream parties, with
