This reinstated six previous UNSC resolutions which had imposed sanctions targeting Iran\u2019s nuclear and military programmes.<\/p>\n<p>These cover the following:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arms embargo:<\/strong> The UN banned the transfer of conventional arms to and from Iran.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nuclear and uranium enrichment<\/strong>: A ban on the sale or supply of materials, equipment, goods and technology which could contribute to these programmes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ballistic missiles:<\/strong> Restrictions on activities linked to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finance and trade:<\/strong> Asset freezes and controls on trade linked to Iran\u2019s nuclear and missile programmes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Targeted sanctions:<\/strong> Sanctions against dozens of individuals and entities involved in banned programmes.<\/p>\n<p>This month, the US unleashed a new set of sanctions against Iran as part of its bid to squeeze the country economically amid the ongoing war. These sanctions are enforced by the US Department of the Treasury\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).<\/p>\n<div class=\"container--ads in-article-ads\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>These include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Economic and trade sanctions:<\/strong> A broad trade embargo banning most trade and investment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Secondary sanctions:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/features\/2026\/8\/25\/trumps-latest-wave-of-iran-sanctions-which-60-entities-are-targeted\">Foreign entities<\/a> which engage in trade, or in the financing of trade, with Iran in a wide range of sectors \u2013 not just energy and finance \u2013 such as digital assets, technology, gold, aviation and shipping \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2026\/8\/26\/trump-threatens-irans-partners-how-do-secondary-sanctions-work\">face US sanctions<\/a> as well. The aim is to isolate Iran from the international financial system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sectoral sanctions:<\/strong> These target specific sectors of Iran\u2019s economy, particularly energy and shipping. Sanctions restrict the export of goods and services to these sectors by targeting entities doing business with them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Human rights and terrorism-related sanctions:<\/strong> Individuals and entities linked to human rights abuses are targeted, including designating members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and other groups as \u201cSpecially Designated Global Terrorists\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Frozen assets:<\/strong> US sanctions have resulted in the freezing of billions of dollars in Iranian assets held in US banks and financial institutions.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"european-union\">European Union<\/h2>\n<p>EU sanctions against Iran, which are regularly reviewed and adjusted, include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nuclear-related sanctions:<\/strong> Restrictions on the supply of goods and technology related to Iran\u2019s nuclear programme.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Economic and trade restrictions:<\/strong> A trade embargo on Iranian oil and petroleum products, and restrictions on dual-use goods \u2013 those which have military applications as well as civil ones \u2013 being exported to Iran.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Financial sanctions:<\/strong> A ban on transactions with banks seen to be involved in nuclear proliferation or \u201cterrorism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sectoral sanctions:<\/strong> Covering Iranian economic sectors such as shipping, aviation, petrochemicals and metals such as aluminium and steel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arms embargo:<\/strong> Ban on the sale or transfer of arms and components to Iran.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"united-kingdom\">United Kingdom<\/h2>\n<p>The UK\u2019s sanctions regime against Iran largely mirrors those of the UN and EU.<\/p>\n<p>They include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nuclear-related sanctions:<\/strong> Restrictions on the export of goods and technology linked to nuclear proliferation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Economic and trade sanctions:<\/strong> A trade embargo on Iranian oil and gas products, as well as restrictions on the export of goods and services to Iran, particularly those related to its nuclear and ballistic missiles programmes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Financial sanctions:<\/strong> Asset freezes on Iranian banks and financial institutions, as well as a ban on providing financial services to specific Iranian entities linked to nuclear programmes or \u201cterrorism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sectoral sanctions:<\/strong> Sanctions targeting shipping and maritime sectors, as well as restrictions on trading \u201csensitive\u201d goods \u2013 such as dual-use goods.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container--ads id=\"other-countries\">Other countries<\/h2>\n<p>Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Norway and Switzerland have implemented their own versions of many of the above sanctions, primarily focused on
